FITSI-DC Chapter to Hold Seminar on FISMA Compliance Based on NIST Publications

 February 8, 2012

Sessions will be held April 3-4 at George Mason University

The DC Chapter of the Federal IT Security Institute (FITSI) has announced it will conduct a special two-day seminar April 3-4 on compliance of federal agencies with the Federal Information Security Management Act (FISMA) requirements for implementing and assessing effective information security programs.

The seminar will follow guidance as set forth by the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST).  It is aimed primarily at intermediate-level IT auditors or other security specialists who work in information security programs for federal agencies.

The seminar will be held at Founders Hall on the Arlington Campus of George Mason University, 3351 North Fairfax Drive, Arlington, VA.  Sessions will be held from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. both days.  Coffee and sign-in will begin at 7:30 a.m. on April 3.

Cost will be $400 for FITSI members, $500 for ISACA/IIA/ISSA members, and $600 for others.  Those who join FITSI at registration will pay only $445.

Under the direction of the Office of Management & Budget (OMB), agencies must comply with NIST guidelines to implement adequate security controls.  The seminar will follow the outline of NIST’s Special Publication (SP) 800-37: guide for applying the risk management framework (RMF) to federal information systems.

The purpose of 800-37 is to provide guidelines for applying RMF to federal information systems in a wide range of tasks, including defining security categorization, selecting and implementing security controls, conducting security control assessment, obtaining information system authorization and continuous monitoring.

The seminar will also cover important special publications, federal information processing standards and regulatory mandates referenced in 800-37.

It is recommended that attendees take the Metro Orange Line to the Virginia Square stop.  Those driving are asked to start early to avoid traffic congestion in the area.  The closest public parking garage to GMU is located at 913 N. Lincoln Street, Arlington.
